DAN LEVINSON SEPTEMBER-OCTOBER PERFORMANCE SCHEDULE
[You are receiving this email because you subscribed to my mailing list. If you haven't already done so, please add dan@danlevinson.com to your address book or contact list to ensure uninterrupted delivery of my messages. Thanks - Dan]
Dear Friends,
Below is my long-overdue performance schedule for the next couple of months. I'm pleased to announce that things are finally slowing down a bit after a whirlwind summer during which I barely had time to catch my breath. I do love performing, but "everything in moderation," right? Trouble with me is…I'm just a guy who can't say no - especially when the job involves good musicians and the opportunity to play good music.
Here's a list of the places I'll be over the next two months:
New York, NY, of course
Los Angeles, CA
Babylon, NY
Northport, NY
Basking Ridge, NJ
Freeport, NY
Lucerne, Switzerland
Great Neck, NY
Amityville, NY
Beverly Hills, CA
I'll also be spending a few days in Berlin, Germany at the end of September (recording, not performing), and a few days in Paris, France in mid-October (a "vacation" - if I can manage to sit still for that long).
If you find yourself in my vicinity at any of the events listed below - please do drop by and say hello.

DAN LEVINSON'S ROOF GARDEN JASS BAND
JAZZ TURNS 90! (We look good for our age, don't we?)
On February 26 of this year, exactly 90 years from the day the first jazz records in history were made, the Roof Garden Jass Band was scheduled to present a spectacular anniversary tribute to the Original Dixieland Jazz Band - the band responsible for those records - and other pioneering jazz bands of the period. But with snow forecast and a musician stuck all the way across the county with no means of getting to the concert, for the first time in my twenty-year career I was forced to cancel a performance. The repercussions have been crippling, and I have paid the price. It was months before I could find a new date for the event. Now, finally, at last, we're ready to try again. Here's the background, once again (let's hope we don't have a snowstorm in August)….
I organized the Roof Garden Jass Band in 1987 for my first public concert, an event at NYU honoring the 70th anniversary of recorded jazz. I spent many months listening to the Original Dixieland Jazz Band, and painstakingly wrote out note-for-note transcriptions for the band to play. Over the years our repertoire has broadened, but we have faithfully maintained a focus on early jazz. I believe we are the only band in existence devoted exclusively to what we like to call "rag-a-jazz."
Twenty years later the Roof Garden Jass Band is assembling to honor the 90th anniversary of the first jazz recordings. On August 1st, in Morristown, New Jersey, we'll be playing a ninety-minute set - one minute for each year in the history of jazz. For those of you on the other side of country who can't attend, we'll be performing two days later at the Orange County Classic Jazz Festival (see August 3rd below). I've got some stellar musicians on board, so don't miss this rare opportunity to hear jazz - or jass, as it was known in 1917 - the way it sounded 90 years ago!
