09/25/17 Dan Levinson’s Roof Garden Jass Band Lancaster, PA Lancaster Catholic High School Old Main Auditorium United States
Time: 7:30pm. Age restrictions: All Ages. Address: 650 Juliette Ave.. Venue phone: (717) 509-0310. Lancaster Catholic High School’s Concert & Lecture Series presents “AT THE ‘JASS’ BAND BALL: A Centennial Celebration of Recorded Jazz”. Featuring Dan Levinson’s Roof Garden Jass Band: Mike Davis (cornet), Jim Fryer (trombone), Dan Levinson (clarinet/C-melody sax), Dalton Ridenhour (piano), Kevin Dorn (drums), with special guest Colin Hancock (cornet). On the morning of February 26, 1917, while America simmered on the brink of war, the Victor Talking Machine Company brought a band of five musical revolutionaries from New Orleans into their new recording studio at 46 West 38th Street in Manhattan. They had come to New York by way of Chicago a month earlier at the invitation of Al Jolson, and had quickly become a sensation through their nightly appearance at Reisenweber’s Restaurant on Columbus Circle. They called themselves “The Original Dixieland ‘Jass’ Band”, and they played an exciting, fiery kind of music that was unlike anything else on record at that time, and which the New York public hadn’t heard before. On that historic day, the ODJB made what would become the first “jazz” phonograph record. It was released in late April 1917, and sales quickly surpassed the sales of records by Enrico Caruso and John Philip Sousa, the industry’s top sellers at that time. The sounds on that wax disc heralded a concurrent revolution in music that took the country by storm and went on to captivate an entire planet. On September 25, one hundred years later, Dan Levinson’s Roof Garden Jass Band will take you back to that historic moment in time and delight your senses with those very same sounds that exalted a war-weary nation and propelled it into a wild, hypnotic frenzy.
